TORTURING TUDORS:

Meet Richard Topcliffe; infamous torturer

Stuck for things to do with the little monsters this coming Whitsun holiday? Then why don’t you head on down to the Clink Prison Museum in Southwark. Come and meet Richard Topcliffe, inquisitor and torturer to Elizabeth I, as he recalls many of the terrifying tortures administered to the unfortunate prisoners of the Tudor Dynasty. Hear about Henry VIII’s orders to boil in oil people who have poisoned others. Shiver at the facts of Anne Askew’s last few days at the Tower of London.

Discover what Richard Topcliffe had built in his basement. During the Tudor period, many religious prisoners – Catholics and Protestants were imprisoned in the Clink, many of them were tortured either at the Clink or in the Tower. Hundreds of them perished for their beliefs
